The Profession is "DENTAL TECHNOLOGY", where did the Name "DENTAL TECHNICIANS" come from?

Dental Profession in NIGERIA has the following arms and each arm has its specialties.

Listed below are the main arms:

  1. Dental Surgery
  2. Dental Technology
  3. Dental Therapy
  4. Dental Nursing
  5. Dental Technicians

In Britain according to General Dental Council (GDC) the following are RECOGNISED TO PRACTICE  dentistry according to specific criteria that their training education met:

  1. Dentist.
  2. Dental Technician.
  3. Dental nurse.
  4. Dental therapist.
  5. Dental hygienist.
  6. Orthodontic therapist.
  7. Clinical dental technician.
THE SUBJECT MATTER
Why are those trained in dental technology named Dental Technicians in Britain, USA, Canada and many European countries? Watch out for more details later.
IN NIGERIA
Up and until 1991 certificates earned by dental technology professionals bore the name DENTAL TECHNICIAN. Does this justify why some dental professionals still called dental technologists dental technicians? In Nigeria the name Technician is associated with artisans. Artisans do not necessarily have to go through any education curriculum to have their training and are therefore those that acquired skills through aprecentiship training.

With well defined and recognised curriculum Dental Technology profession is different. Therefore, it is not in order to name those who practice Dental Technology in Nigeria Dental Technicians. Besides, the decree that recognised Dental Technology education and practice do not name practitioners as dental technicians
(Dental Technologists Registration Board of Nigeria established by Act Cap D6 of 2004 (Decree 43 of 1987).
It is therefore out of order and to some dental technology practitioners it is an INSULT to associate them with artisans and name them Dental Technicians.
WHY THIS WRITE-UP?
Some dental professionals still out of derogation refer to dental technologists as dental technicians.
ADD YOUR VOICE to the rejection of that name especially because another arm of dentistry in Nigeria is now called by that name. Your comments are required to NAIL this wrong. Comment Below.

  3. Next time you are invited to attend their event just know they just want you to populate their oral health walk. They wanted you for number but are nit team players. You don't derogate your team members. You don't deride your team and tackle their professional and career advancements. You don't frustrate their unity by divide-and-rule games at government dental centres. You don't play down on their roles and make them nobody.

  4. Referring to a graduate of Dental Technology as a Dental Technician is misnomer and highly disgusting.
Our colleagues in Manchester totally agreed with me during our international Conference in Telford,UK. The awareness is better and correction is going at higher pace.

  6. I stand with the nomenclature dental technologist. As the world is evolving it will be prudent for us to have a three dimensional thinking. Most professions want something better for their profession because everyone want to feel among. The name dental technician sounds anachronous.
